Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 16: Minister of Health, Smt K K Shailaja has informed that Covid-19 was confirmed in 1,530 persons in Kerala today. 1,351 were cases of local transmission and the source of infection in 100 cases was not traceable. Of those diagnosed today, 37 came back from foreign countries and 89 from other states. 53 healthcare workers were also infected. Meanwhile, 1,099 patients undergoing treatment for Coronavirus have recovered today.

10 deaths have been confirmed as due to Covid-19 taking the total death toll to 156.  The deceased are C C Raghavan (71), Moosa (76), Simon (60), C V Venugopalan (80) and Gopi (69) of Kannur district; Kanakaraj (60) from Thiruvananthapuram district, Mathew (60) from Pathanamthitta district, Abdul Khader (73) and Leelamani Amma (71) from Ernakulam district, and Sarojini (72) from Kollam district. Further Covid deaths will be confirmed after subsequent tests at NIV, Alappuzha.

Those who tested positive today are 519 persons from Thiruvananthapuram district, 221 in Malappuram district, 123 from Ernakulam district, 118 in Kozhikode district, 100 from Kottayam district, 86 in Alappuzha district, 81 from Kollam district, 52 in Kannur district, 49 from Wayanad district. 48 in Kasaragod district, 44 from Pathanamthitta district, 30 each in Idukki and Thrissur districts and 29 from Palakkad district.

The district-wise numbers for those infected through contact are 487 in Thiruvananthapuram district, 200 in Malappuram district, 110 in Ernakulam district, 106 in Kozhikode district, 91 in Kottayam district, 73 in Alappuzha district, 70 in Kollam district, 38 in Kannur district, 37 in Kasargod district, 36 in Wayanad district, 33 in Pathanamthitta, 27 in Thrissur district, 24 in Palakkad district and 19 in Idukki district.

There are 23 infected healthcare workers in Thiruvananthapuram district, 12 in Malappuram district, eight in Kannur district, four in Ernakulam district, two in Kollam district and one each in Palakkad, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Kasaragod districts.

The number of patients whose test results were negative today are 203 in Kasaragod district, 190 from Thiruvananthapuram district, 120 in Ernakulam district, 107 from Palakkad district, 82 in Malappuram district, 64 from Thrissur district, 61 each in Kottayam and Wayanad districts, 55 from Kollam district, 43 in Kozhikode district, 39 from Idukki district, 30 in Alappuzha district, 24 from Pathanamthitta district and 20 in Kannur district.

The number of patients under treatment has crossed the 15,000 mark in Kerala for the first time as there are currently 15,310 patients in hospitals. Till now, 28,878 have been cured of Covid.

There are at present a total of 1,62,217 people under observation in various districts of the state, 1,48,793 in home or institutional quarantine and 13,424 in hospitals. 1,548 persons were hospitalised today.

30,123 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. A total of 11,82,727 samples have so far been sent for testing and the results of 8,256 samples are yet to come. As part of the Sentinel Surveillance, 1,49,385 samples were collected from high priority groups, including health workers, guest workers, and people with greater public contact and 1,187 results are awaited.

19 new places were demarcated as hotspots today even as 13 were excluded. There are 568 hotspots in the State now.
