Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 17: 1,725 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in Kerala today. According to the Minister of Health, Smt K K Shailaja, 1,572 persons were infected through contact and the source of infection in 94 cases is unknown. 45 of those diagnosed are returnees from abroad and 75 from other states. At the same time, 1,131 patients under treatment have recovered today.

13 deaths have been confirmed today as due to Covid-19. The deceased are Varghese (90) from Kannur district, K G Chandran (75) & Rajam S Pillai (76) from Alappuzha district; Bichu (69) from Kozhikode district; Asma (38), Abbas (55), Ramesan (47), Mariamma (75) & Risa Fathima (7 months) from Kasaragod district; Kurian Titus (42), Selvaraj (58) & Siluvamma (75) from Thiruvananthapuram district and Bichava Haji (65) from Malappuram district. The Covid related death toll is now 169. Further deaths will be confirmed after tests at NIV, Alappuzha.

The numbers of the new active cases are 461 in Thiruvananthapuram district, 306 from Malappuram district, 156 in Thrissur district, 139 from Alappuzha district, 137 in Palakkad district, 129 from Ernakulam district, 97 in Kasaragod district, 89 from Kottayam district, 77 in Kannur district, 48 from Kollam district, 46 in Kozhikode district, 23 from Idukki district, 15 in Wayanad district and two from Pathanamthitta district.

The district-wise figures of the contact cases are 435 in Thiruvananthapuram district, 285 in Malappuram district, 144 in Thrissur district, 124 in Palakkad district, 123 in Ernakulam district, 122 in Alappuzha district, 90 in Kasargod district, 81 in Kottayam district, 61 in Kannur district, 45 in Kollam district, 33 from Kozhikode district, 14 from Idukki district, 13 from Wayanad district and two from Pathanamthitta district.

31 healthcare workers are among those infected today – 15 in Thiruvananthapuram district, five in Kannur district, three each in Thrissur and Malappuram districts, two in Kozhikode district and one each in Ernakulam, Palakkad and Kasaragod districts. Two DSC personnel in Kannur District were also infected by Coronavirus.

The statistics of the patients who tested negative today are 270 in Thiruvananthapuram district, 170 from Kasaragod district, 130 in Malappuram district, 110 from Alappuzha district, 89 in Kollam district, 76 from Kozhikode district, 63 in Ernakulam district, 53 from Palakkad district, 46 in Kottayam district, 42 from Thrissur district, 32 in Pathanamthitta district, 22 from Kannur district, 15 in Idukki district and 13 from Wayanad district.

There are presently 15,890 patients undergoing treatment and 30,029 persons have been freed of Covid till now.

1,64,029 persons are under surveillance in various districts of the state, 1,50,332 under home or institutional quarantine and 13,697 under observation in hospitals. 1,455 people were admitted to the hospital today.

26,150 samples were tested during the last 24 hours. A total of 12,05,759 samples have so far been sent for testing and 1,49,766 samples were from priority groups as part of Sentinel Surveillance.

24 new places were declared as hotspots today while 21 were exempted. There are currently 571 hotspots in Kerala now.
