Fans of horror films are in for a treat at International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK 2022). Not only does it offer a separate category for horror films (aptly named ‘Shiver Shiver’), it will also screen the hugely popular The Medium, directed by the Thai master of the genre, Banjong Pisanthanakun. To be screened on March 21, The Medium essays the horrifying story of a psychic medium’s travails in the Isan region of Thailand, who is being filmed by a documentary crew. They realise that Bayan, a goddess, has taken possession of the medium’s niece. In time, they also suspect the goddess may not be as benevolent as it first appears.

There is an intensity to the suspense and pacing as the medium, Nim, begins the race to save the niece as well as the village from the vagaries of the goddess. Chilling and shocking by turns, The Medium is a tense and fun ride through the horror genre, proving that Banjong, who earlier made the monster hit Shutter, is a master at the game. The film which has received awards for Best Film at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, the Online Film Critics Society Awards and San Sebastian Horror Fantasy Film Week, is being premiered for the first time in India.
