Thiruvananthapuram, May 24: 53 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in Kerala today. 12 persons each from Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur districts, five each in Malappuram and Kasargod districts, four each from Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Palakkad districts, three in Kollam district, two from Pathanamthitta district, and one in Kozhikode district are those who tested positive. Of these, 29 have come back from other States (Maharashtra-19, Gujarat-5, Tamil Nadu-3, Madhya Pradesh-1 & Delhi-1) and 18 have returned from other countries (UAE-11, Oman-3, Saudi Arabia-3, & Kuwait-1). A native of Tamil Nadu has also been confirmed with the virus. Five are cases of local transmission including one health worker in Palakkad.

Meanwhile, five patients under treatment for Coronavirus have tested negative today. Three patients from Wayanad district and two from Kasaragod district are those who recovered from the infection. Till now, 520 patients have been cured of the virus in the State.

Giving details in a press release, Health Minister Smt K K Shailaja also informed the death of a native of Wayanad district who was under treatment in Kozhikode district. She was a cancer patient who had returned from Dubai on May 20 for further treatment.

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Kerala is 847 and currently, 322 patients are under treatment in various hospitals.

As on today, there are 95,394 persons under quarantine in different districts in the State. Out of these, 94,662 are under observation at their homes or institutional quarantine centres and 732 are in isolation in hospitals. 188 persons were admitted to hospitals today.

In the last 24 hours, 1,726 samples were tested. Till now, samples from 53,873 people have been sent for testing and the results of 52,355 samples are negative. Apart from this, as part of sentinel surveillance of high-risk category group consisting of healthcare workers, migrant labourers and those with higher public exposure, 8,027 samples were tested separately. Of these, 7,588 samples have tested negative.

18 new places were declared as hotspots today – one in Kasargod district, seven in Palakkad district, two each in Kottayam, Alappuzha and Kozhikode districts and four in Kannur district. In total, there are 55 hotspots in the State now.

So far, 93,404 persons have arrived in Kerala from foreign countries and other States – 7,847 through airports, 1,621 through the seaport, 4,028 by train and 79,908 through check posts by road.
