16 new hotspots, total 195

Thiruvananthapuram, July 10:  488 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in Kerala today while 143 patients have recovered. Sharing the details, Chief Minister, Shri Pinarayi Vijayan said that 234 were cases of infection through contact as 167 were in those who came back from overseas and 76 from other states.

The CM also condoled the deaths of Saifuddin, a 66-year old in Thiruvananthapuram and P K Balakrishnan Nair, a 79-year old in Ernakulam district.

Addressing the media, the Chief Minister said, “The situation is similar to the last few days and we are moving to a very serious condition. The figures available today are indicative of an increase in the spread of the disease across the state. Daily cases are on the rise, the numbers of contact cases are also increasing and there are several cases without any known source of infection. Super spread is already there and this can any moment become a community spread which we should avoid at all cost. It is also a matter of concern that the situation is very grim in coastal areas.”

The district-wise figures of those who tested positive today are 87 from Alappuzha district, 69 in Thiruvananthapuram district, 54 from Pathanamthitta district, 51 in Malappuram district, 48 from Palakkad district, 47 in Ernakulam district (one dead), 29 from Thrissur district, 19 in Kannur district, 18 each from Kollam and Kasargod districts, 17 in Kozhikode district, 15 from Kottayam district, 11 in Wayanad district and five from Idukki district.

57 people in Thiruvananthapuram district, 51 from Alappuzha district, 35 in Ernakulam district, 29 from Pathanamthitta district, 27 in Malappuram district, 10 from Kozhikode district, nine in Kollam district, seven from Kasargod district, four each in Thrissur and Kottayam districts and one from Kannur district are those who were infected through contact.

Three health workers were also infected, one each in Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki districts. In addition, four DSC employees from Kannur district, two ITBP personnel in Alappuzha district, a BSF jawan each in Thrissur and Palakkad districts were infected with the disease.

43 patients from Pathanamthitta district, 26 in Kollam district, 17 from Thrissur district, 15 in Malappuram district, 11 from Alappuzha district, seven in Palakkad district, six each from Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam districts, four each in Idukki and Kozhikode districts, three from Ernakulam district and one in Kannur district are those whose test results were negative today. Presently, 3,442 patients are undergoing treatment while 3,965 people have so far been cured of Coronavirus.

At present, there are 1,82,050 people under surveillance in various districts of the state, 1,78,356 under home or institutional quarantine and 3,694 isolated in hospitals. 570 people were hospitalised today.

12,104 samples were tested during the last 24 hours. A total of 3,34,849 samples have been sent for testing and the results of 6,449 samples are yet to come. As part of Sentinel Surveillance, 73,768 samples were collected from high-risk groups and 66,636 samples were negative.

16 new places were designated as hotspots today while 15 were excluded from the list. There are a total of 195 hotspots now in Kerala.
