Renowned Filmmaker and sixteen times National Award winner, Shri. Adoor Gopalakrishnan commented that there are constant attacks and attempts by authoritative regimes to dismantle the purpose and art of films. He was talking in the open forum on ‘Film Policies in India’ conducted at the International Film Festival of Kerala.
He also warned if censorship and super censorship continue to impede the freedom of good cinemas, then the Indian film industry will fall back to Bollywood culture, constrained in entertainment with no sense of real-life and value for culture. On arguing that culture and filmmaking receive the least priority in Government interventions, he also commented that the central government is trying to erase what Jawaharlal Nehru once laid down and that there will be nothing to replace the void.
“Democracy is not the autocracy of the majority’’, he added while calling for all film enthusiasts, film societies and activists to continue fighting for the rights, for better cinemas and freedom of filmmakers. He was the harbinger of the new wave of art films into Mollywood and had head started various movements to bring film discourses into the mainstream. Adoor Gopalakrishnan is also the recipient of Padma Shri, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Padma Bhushan and J.C Daniel Award. Premendra Mazumdar, National award-winning documentary director Joshy Joseph, Dr C. S Venkateshwar were other eminent personalities present at the discussion.
