For the first time in India, Kerala’s General Education Department has created special textbooks for hearing-impaired students. Since regular textbooks can be hard for them to follow because they rely a lot on both hearing and seeing, these new books use more pictures and simpler lessons to make learning easier and more fun.

The goal is to help hearing-impaired children enjoy learning and overcome the difficulties they face with regular study materials. The books were made by SCERT with the help of experienced teachers and subject experts from both special and regular schools.

These textbooks are designed for lower primary (LP) classes. By the time students complete this level, they should be able to move on to regular textbooks. Lessons start with easy-to-pronounce letters and words. So far, 12 special textbooks have been prepared for students in classes 1, 2, and 3 in 32 special schools across Kerala. A book for class 4 is also on the way.

This is a proud moment for Kerala and sets an example for the rest of the country. These new textbooks will help hearing-impaired students learn better and feel included in the classroom, giving them equal chances to grow and succeed.
