The state government announced a multi-pronged strategy, which includes vaccination to tackle the rabies jabs. A month-long drive to vaccinate the strays will begin on September 20. The move aims at reducing the number of rabid dogs. Block Panchayats, Municipalities, and Corporations will be allowed to hire special vehicles for this purpose. The drive will start with the people who are already trained.  Training will be provided to Kudumbashree members and those interested in the volunteer force formed during Covid-19. Nine days of training will be given in September itself in association with Veterinary University. The vaccination of stray dogs reduces the risk even if bitten. The Animal Welfare Department will take steps to purchase the vaccine urgently. The possibilities of oral vaccination are also being explored. This method has been successfully implemented in places like Goa and Chandigarh.

The state govt also decided to set up more shelters for stray dogs in local bodies. Special shelters will also be opened in hotspots if needed.  Safe waste disposal is important to keep the surroundings clean and keep stray dogs from forming packs. The district collectors and district panchayat presidents will hold meetings with owners of eateries, auditoriums, and meat shops for the safe disposal of food waste.  An extensive public intervention will also be implemented as part of this.

Action will be taken to complete vaccination and license for all pet dogs in the state by October 30. A special camp will be organized if necessary. License applications for pet dogs will be made online through the I.L.G.M.S citizen portal. The license can be obtained within seven days of application.
