The Health Department has launched the state’s first Cancer Grid to make cancer diagnosis and treatment more efficient. Developed as part of the ‘Arogyam Aanantham-Akattaam Arbudham’ campaign, the Cancer Grid aims to provide accurate testing and treatment without any worries for individuals at risk of cancer, starting from the grassroots level.

The Cancer Grid connects cancer screening centers, hospitals with treatment facilities, diagnostic centers, and regional cancer centers across the state, creating a comprehensive network. This integrated system ensures uniform and high-quality cancer care throughout the state.

The Cancer Grid maps out the availability of cancer screening facilities, referral centers for suspected cases, and the necessary services required at each stage of cancer diagnosis and treatment. When cancer is detected at any health facility, the Grid identifies the nearest specialist centers for follow-up testing and treatment.

Patients are referred to appropriate centers close to their initial health facility, and the relevant center is notified in advance. After providing samples, patients can return home, and test results are communicated through the nearest health center. If further follow-up services are needed, patients are referred to advanced centers, while post-treatment care is provided through public health centers.

The establishment of the Cancer Grid involved a detailed gap analysis in hospitals, followed by strategic measures to bridge these gaps. The system guarantees consistent quality of care across the state, uniform treatment protocols, and standardized guidelines for cancer care. It also fosters collaboration among cancer specialists, facilitating knowledge sharing and promoting research and innovation in cancer treatment and prevention.

In view of the increasing number of cancer patients in the state, the Health Department is organizing a year-long public cancer campaign ‘Arogyam Aanandham-Akattam Arbudham’, giving special importance to early diagnosis and care. The Cancer Grid will be very helpful in the campaign activities that ensure expert examination and treatment for those who are found to be at risk of the disease during screening.
