Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 22: Minister for Health, Smt K K Shailaja has informed that Covid-19 was confirmed in 2,172 persons in Kerala today. 1,964 are cases of local transmission and the source of infection in 153 was not traceable. 52 are those who came back from overseas while 102 are from other states. 54 healthcare workers were also infected by Coronavirus. Meanwhile, 1,292 patients under treatment for the disease have tested negative and were discharged from hospitals today.

15 recent deaths in the State were confirmed today as being caused by Covid taking the Covid related death toll to 218. Syed Ayub Shah (60), Surendran (65), Prathap Chandran (62), Shamsuddin (76), Raghavan Pillai (76), Stephen (50), Rasheeda (56), Aryan Anto (67) & Sasidharan (69) from Thiruvananthapuram district; Fathima (65) from Malappuram district, Sarada (70) & Babu (79) from Thrissur district, Khadeeja Elias Fathima (70) from Kannur district, and Vrinda Jeevan (54) & Gopinathan (63) from Ernakulam district are the deceased. More deaths will be confirmed after further tests at NIV, Alappuzha.

The district-wise numbers of those who tested positive today are 464 from Thiruvananthapuram district, 395 in Malappuram district, 232 from Kozhikode district, 184 in Palakkad district, 179 from Thrissur district, 119 in Kasaragod district, 114 from Ernakulam district, 104 in Kottayam district, 93 from Pathanamthitta district. 87 in Alappuzha district, 77 from Kollam district, 62 in Kannur district, 37 from Idukki district and 25 in Wayanad district.

Those infected through contact are 450 persons from Thiruvananthapuram district, 366 in Malappuram district, 213 from Kozhikode district, 152 in Thrissur district, 147 from Palakkad district, 111 in Kasaragod district, 108 from Ernakulam district, 97 in Kottayam district, 83 from Alappuzha district, 75 in Kollam district, 65 from Pathanamthitta district, 56 in Kannur district, 23 from Wayanad district and 18 in Idukki district.

The number of infected healthcare workers are 14 in Palakkad district, 11 in Malappuram district, nine in Thiruvananthapuram district, eight in Thrissur district, five in Kasargod district, three in Ernakulam district, two in Kozhikode district and one each in Wayanad and Kannur districts.

290 patients in Thiruvananthapuram district, 65 from Kollam district, 29 in Pathanamthitta district, 125 from Alappuzha district, 92 in Kottayam district, 46 from Idukki district, 98 in Ernakulam district, 50 from Thrissur district, 89 in Palakkad district, 240 from Malappuram district, 20 in Kozhikode district, 52 from Wayanad district, 56 in Kannur district and 40 from Kasaragod district are those who tested negative today.

So far, 36,539 persons have recovered from Covid in the State and at present, 19,538 patients are undergoing treatment for the same.

There are currently 1,80,249 people under observation across the state, 1,63,738 at home or in institutional quarantine and 16,511 in hospitals. 2,699 persons were admitted to the hospital today.

There has been an increase in the number of tests being conducted with 37,027 samples being tested over the last 24 hours. Till now, a total of 13,86,775 samples have been sent for testing, including 1,61,361 samples as part of Sentinel Surveillance from priority groups.

25 new places were designated as hotspots today while 17 were excluded from the list. There are now 616 hotspots in Kerala.
