Kerala’s first Transgender Crisis Intervention Centre has been opened in Kakkanad, Ernakulam district, to support transgender individuals facing various challenges. Set up by the Social Justice Department, the centre aims to offer safe shelter, medical care, and counselling to those in need, helping them navigate difficult situations and move forward with confidence.
The centre offers safe shelter, medical help, and counselling to those in need. It is open 24 hours a day and provides urgent support for problems like sexual harassment, domestic violence, mental stress, and health issues. A helpline number is available, and trained counsellors are there to help. The centre is also run by transgender individuals, making it a safe and welcoming space.
This centre is part of the government’s ‘Karuthal’ counselling project, which supports the transgender community. Kerala has been a leader in supporting transgender rights. In 2015, it became the first state in India to introduce a transgender policy. The new centre in Kakkanad is another important step in helping transgender people live with dignity and support. It is also expected to serve as a model for other states in the country.
