Kerala’s first advanced Science Centre has started functioning, offering exciting opportunities for learning and exploration. Located on 30 acres of land in Kozha, within Kuravilangad Grama Panchayat in Kottayam district, Science City operates under the Science and Technology Museum, which is part of the Higher Education Department. The project aims to raise public awareness about science and spark interest in scientific subjects, especially among children. The development is being done in two phases. The second phase will include a motion simulator, augmented and virtual reality theatres, a light and sound show, musical fountain, and a sky observation system.
At the heart of the project is the Science Centre, which includes science galleries, a 3D theatre, a science park, a seminar hall, and an innovation hub. Science City also plans to feature a planetarium, observatory, gardens, visitor amenities, and supporting infrastructure. The Science Centre building covers an area of 47,147 square feet and features various themed exhibition sections. These include the Fun Science Gallery, Emerging Technology, Marine Science, Science Park, Activity Centre, and a 3D theatre and exhibition hall.
Fun Science Gallery
This section presents around 50 exhibits that explore scientific principles in an engaging way. Themes include Electromagnetic Theory, Sound of Music, Brain Games, and Mathematical Models. It is especially enjoyable for science enthusiasts.
Emerging Technology
This section showcases innovations reflecting recent scientific advancements. Exhibits focus on Agriculture, Health, Materials Science, Energy, Information Technology, Communication, and Space Science.
Marine Science
Here, visitors can explore life under the sea. Exhibits include marine plants, ocean floor maps, models and images of sea creatures, and information about their natural habitats. There are around 50 displays in this section.
3D Theatre
This theatre offers a 3D visual experience of the ocean floor and the sky. It also shows how human life evolved over time. The 20-minute show features two immersive videos.
Science Park
The outdoor science park includes 32 interactive exhibits that demonstrate scientific principles, mainly in physics, through fun and engaging displays.
Activity Centre
This space is designed for children to conduct simple science experiments using the tools and materials provided.
Temporary Exhibition Hall
This hall features still models and displays based on various scientific concepts and principles.
The Science Centre also includes exciting exhibits such as the Spinning Eraser, Magic Water Tap, Illusion with Rings, and Scanimation that simplify complex scientific ideas. Other interactive displays like the Fun Mirror, Curving Tunnel, Frozen Shadow, and Colour Shadow let visitors experience how optical illusions work.
Science City is open to the public from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and is closed on Mondays. The entry fee is ₹30 for general visitors and ₹20 for students. More than just an educational space, Science City blends knowledge with entertainment.
