The Motor Vehicle Department has launched new digital services in KSRTC to make travel easier and more modern for the public. The main features include a rechargeable smart card to replace paper tickets and passes, and the Chalo mobile app to check real-time bus information and recharge passes. KSRTC’s Smart Yatra project aims to improve travel facilities, support cashless payments, increase income, and make travel information more accessible.
Smart Card / Travel Card:
Passengers will now get rechargeable smart cards instead of paper tickets. These cards can store daily, weekly, or monthly passes. The smart card system was first tested in some districts and was a success. The card costs ₹100 and can be bought from bus conductors, KSRTC units, or marketing staff. It comes with zero balance but can be recharged with any amount between ₹50 and ₹3,000, based on your need. The card works with Electronic Ticket Machines (ETMs) in buses. Using this card helps save time and makes the travel process easier.
The KSRTC smart card costs ₹100. When you buy the card, make sure it is working properly. It will be valid for one year. You can let someone else use your card, but if it gets lost, only the original owner is responsible. If the card stops working, you can get a new one within five days by applying at the nearest depot with your name, address, and phone number. The balance from the old card will be added to the new one. But if the card is damaged like torn, bent, or broken they won’t get a replacement.
All types of travel passes, including those for students and differently-abled passengers, will now be issued as smart cards. Students no longer need to visit the office every year to renew their pass. They can simply renew it by paying on the bus. Only the cost of the card will be charged, the travel will still be free.
Information on Chalo App:
Passengers can use the Chalo mobile app to get live updates about KSRTC buses. The app shows the real-time location of buses, routes, ticket fares, and details of travel passes. You can also use the app to recharge or renew your pass. While waiting at the bus stop, you can check when the next bus is coming and whether seats are available. It is advised to buy your ticket in advance through the app. When you board the bus, just show the QR code on the app to the conductor.
KSRTC’s ‘Smart Yatra’ project is bringing big changes to public transport. By combining regular bus travel with modern technology like smart cards and the Chalo app, it makes travel easier and more convenient for passengers. This digital upgrade not only improves KSRTC’s services but also prepares the way for more advanced changes in the future.
